Following links from
Pal Singh Purewal's page updated 22 Nov 2006:-
This is the new Sikh calendar developed
by Pal Singh Purewal, that was first used in the year 531 (starting
March 1999). The Nanakshahi
Calendar was implemented by the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee
(SGPC) on April 14, 2003. It 'fixes' dates of 'Sangrands' (beginning of the month)
and Gurpurbs in Common Era calendar according to the length of the
tropical solar year, instead of the lunar cycle, meaning that dates will
not fluctuate from year to year as they did previously. The Nanakshai
New Year starts on 1 Chet / 14 March, as the first month of the year as
in Gurbani, the
date of the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji in the year 1469 CE irrespective
of the fact that Guru Nanak Sahib’s parkash day
falls on a different day.
However, the Guru Nanak Sahib's parkash
Gurpurb, and Bandi Chhor Divas (Diwali) shall continue to be celebrated
according to the old calendar. To appease the 'Sants', Hola Mohalla date
was also made an exception. Amavasyas
(new moon) and Puranmasi's (full moon) are also shown separately as The
Calendar Reform Committee decided that the dates for Amavasyas and
Puranmasis should be given in the Calendar.
